Leonor Orosa Goquingco
National Artist for Dance

"Leonor Orosa Goquingco has won national and international acclaim for her brilliant pioneering efforts in the difficult art of choreography. The pioneer Filipino choreographer in stylized Philippine ballet theater for over four decades, she confronted the endless challenge of elevating Philippine dance to high creative art, lifting it to its peak of national artistic development. Indeed her work are indisputable classics of the genre… in which she distilled the Filipino soul, dramatized the lives of her people, and infinitely enriched the national culture, blazing a trail for others to follow." In recognition of her distinguished contribution to dance, she was conferred the Award of National Artist on 27 March 1976.

Mrs. Goquingco was honored on 5 July 2000 at a program hosted by the Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings (ALIWW). The occasion marked the turn-over to ALIWW by Mrs. Goquingco of her print memorabilia.
